Bacterial Filtration Efficiency and Particle Filtration Efficiency are probably the most important tests to be conducted on medical textile products such as surgical masks, gowns or caps, as well as on air filters.
The BFE test is meant to measure the resistance of the materials and components of above described medical devices to bacteria penetration.Reported as percent efficiency, the higher the number,According to Annex B of EN 14683:2019, BFE is tested a the more effective the barrier.
BFE Testing Method
As follows:
A specimen of the mask material is clamped between a six-stage cascade impactor and an aerosol chamber.
An aerosol of staphylococcus aureus is introduced into the aerosol chamber and drawn through the mask material and the impactor under vacuum.
The bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of the mask is determined by the number of colony forming units that pass through the medical face mask material, which are expressed as a percentage of the number of colony forming units present in the challenge aerosol.
The BFE of the medical face mask shall conform to the minimum value given for the relevant type of mask.
In products such as masks, frequently consisting of two or more components –usually with different composition-, each layer is tested separately. The lowest performing layer is the one determining the BFE value for the whole product comprehensively.
